The Neon Grave

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just made the grime shine. Jack sat in his office, the kind of place where the only thing cleaner than the whiskey was the desperation of the clients. He was a private investigator who specialized in the things people wanted to forget.

Then came Lola.

She walked in like a dream from a different decade, wrapped in a trench coat and a cloud of expensive perfume. She was the "canary" of the Moretti crime family, kept in a penthouse that was essentially a high-rise prison. Her eyes were wide, terrified, and beautiful in the way a car crash is beautiful.

"My father," she whispered, her voice trembling. "He's the only one who can get me out. But Moretti has me under lock and key. I need you to get a message to him. Just one."

Jack wasn't a hero, but he liked the way Lola looked at him—as if he were the only honest man in a city built on lies. He took the job. He spent three nights dodging Moretti's goons, slipping through the shadows of the docks and the neon-lit alleys of Chinatown, eventually tracking down the "Old Man," Lola's father.

The meeting took place in a dim diner that smelled of burnt coffee and old grease. The Old Man didn't look like a savior. He looked like a man who had sold his soul a long time ago and was just waiting for the check to clear.

"I don't want her," the Old Man said, his voice a dry rasp. "Lola was a mistake. A liability. Moretti is doing me a favor by keeping her off the streets. Tell her to stay put and forget I exist."

Jack felt a coldness settle in his chest that no amount of whiskey could thaw. He returned to the penthouse and told Lola the truth. He watched the light die in her eyes, replaced by a hardness that was far more frightening.

"I see," she said. "I guess the only way out is the long way."

They tried to run. They made it as far as the Santa Monica pier, the Pacific Ocean churning below them like a hungry beast. But Moretti's men were already there, their silhouettes stark against the moonlight.

There was no dramatic shootout, no last-minute rescue. There was only the rhythmic thud of gunfire and the sound of two bodies hitting the cold, salt water.

As Jack sank into the dark, his last thought wasn't of Lola or the Old Man. It was of the city—the neon lights of LA flickering above the surface, beautiful and indifferent, continuing to shine long after the last honest man had drowned.
