The Bloom of Decay

The crystal dome was not a sanctuary; it was a terrarium. And we were not the only things growing inside it.

It started with a shimmer in the air—a pale, iridescent fungus that looked like frozen lace. It was beautiful, hauntingly so, weaving itself into the architecture of the micro-city, turning the silver spires into organic, pulsing towers of ivory and gold. The micro-humans loved it. They called it the "Celestial Bloom," a gift from the stars that brought them a sense of peace and a strange, euphoric clarity.

But as I watched from above, I saw the truth. The Bloom was not a plant; it was a parasite. It didn't just grow on the buildings; it grew in the people. I saw the High Chancellor's skin begin to shimmer with a faint, pearlescent glow. I saw the way her movements became fluid, almost hypnotic, as if she were being danced by an invisible string.

"Can't you feel it, Ancestor?" she whispered, her voice now a haunting, multi-tonal chord. "The Bloom is connecting us. We are no longer individuals; we are a single, beautiful song."

Then, the Bloom found me.

It began as a tickle in my lungs, a sweet, floral scent that filled my head with visions of a lost paradise. I looked down at my own arm and saw it—a tiny, exquisite city of ivory towers growing out of my pores. The fungus was using my macro-body as a substrate, building a sprawling, parasitic metropolis on my skin. I could feel the tiny citizens moving within me, their microscopic lives entwined with my own nervous system.

I was becoming a living planet for a race of beautiful monsters.

The horror was not in the pain—there was no pain, only a devastating, poetic pleasure. The horror was in the loss of self. I could feel my thoughts being filtered through the Bloom, my grief being converted into a shimmering, iridescent light. I was being consumed by beauty.

I looked at the embryos in the hold. If I woke them, the Bloom would have a feast. It would spread from my skin to theirs, turning the entire human race into a single, shimmering garden of mindless ecstasy.

I activated the incinerator, not to save the embryos, but to burn the infection. As the lasers tore through the genetic blueprints, I felt a sudden, sharp pain in my own flesh. The Bloom screamed—a billion tiny, melodic voices crying out in unison. I stood there in the obsidian waste, a charred, blackened giant, watching the last of the iridescent towers on my skin turn to ash, alone in a universe that was finally, mercifully, silent.
