The Reliquary of Bone

The city of Micro-Eden was built inside the ribcage of a god. Or at least, that's what the priests told us. In reality, we lived in the ruins of a forgotten laboratory, a place of rusted steel and leaking chemicals, sheltered beneath the calcified remains of a macro-human scientist who had died in the middle of his greatest failure.

We worshipped the Bone. We built our temples in the shadow of his femur and sang hymns to the "Great Architect" who had gifted us with the grace of smallness. I was a seeker, a scavenger of the deep vents, and I had always suspected that the Bone was not a gift, but a warning.

When the Colossus arrived, he didn't come with songs of salvation. He came with a look of absolute horror. He knelt before our city, his eye a vast, judging moon, and I saw him recoil in disgust. He didn't see a civilization; he saw a parasite.

"You are not the children of the stars," he vibrated, his voice a tectonic shift that cracked the pavement of our plazas. "You are the mold on a corpse."

He revealed the truth: the micro-humans were not the result of a planned evolution, but a mutation caused by the leaking chemicals of the laboratory. We were a biological accident, a glitch in the genetic code that had survived by feeding on the decaying remains of the Macro-Era. Our "grace" was actually a form of slow-motion cancer, a cellular instability that made us small but ensured we would never truly be whole.

The High Chancellor tried to hide the truth, claiming the Colossus was a demon sent to test our faith. But the truth was already out. The city began to fracture. The priests were torn down from their pedestals, and the people turned on each other in a frenzy of existential terror.

The Colossus looked at the embryos in his ship—the pure, untainted blueprints of the original humans. For a moment, I thought he would wake them, that he would replace us with a better version of ourselves. But as he looked at the carnage in our streets, the blood and the screaming, he realized that the "accident" had become the only truth left.

He incinerated the embryos. Not to save us, but to ensure that the cycle of failure ended with us. He left us to rot in the ribcage of our dead god, a tiny, screaming colony of mistakes, waiting for the obsidian wind to finally blow us away.
