The Crystal Symmetry

(Fin de Siècle Decadence)

Paris in 1890 was a city of velvet curtains and absinthe-stained dreams. Julian lived in a garret in Montmartre, where the air was thick with the scent of turpentine and the distant, haunting melody of a street accordion. He was an artist who had grown tired of painting people; people were asymmetrical, unpredictable, and profoundly boring.

Julian sought the Symmetry. He believed that beneath the chaos of the visible world lay a geometric perfection—a crystalline architecture that governed the movement of souls and the fall of empires.

He began to experiment with a tincture of wormwood and a rare, iridescent mineral he had purchased from a blind dealer in the Marais. Under its influence, the world began to shift. The edges of his room sharpened; the shadows became precise, mathematical angles. He stopped eating, finding the act of chewing too clumsy, too organic. He slept only in bursts of ten minutes, his mind a whirring machine of calculations.

"Look at it!" he would scream at the few patrons who dared enter his studio. He would point to a blank canvas, but to Julian, it was a roaring torrent of gold and silver fractals, a symphony of interlocking spheres that sang in a frequency of absolute purity.

He became obsessed with the "Final Stroke." He believed that if he could paint the Absolute Symmetry, he would not only capture the universe but become a part of it. He spent months on a single canvas, using a brush made of a single sable hair, applying paint so thin it was almost transparent.

As the painting neared completion, Julian's body began to mirror his work. His skin grew pale and translucent, like fine porcelain. His movements became stiff, rhythmic, and precise. He no longer felt hunger or cold; he felt only the agonizing pull of the symmetry.

On the night of the winter solstice, Julian painted the final dot in the center of the canvas.

For one blinding second, the painting became a window. The symmetry was complete. The room, the city, and Julian himself were suddenly aligned with the cosmic grid. He felt a surge of ecstatic, cold light rushing through his veins, turning his blood into liquid diamond.

The next morning, his landlord entered the studio to collect the rent. He found no sign of Julian. In the center of the room stood a statue of a man, carved from a single, flawless piece of transparent quartz. The statue's face was locked in an expression of absolute, terrifying peace. And on the easel was a painting that was so perfectly symmetrical that anyone who looked at it for too long felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to stop breathing, just to avoid disturbing the balance.
