The Survivalist's Gambit

The rain in New York didn't fall; it assaulted. I sat in a windowless room in a basement in Queens, the air thick with the smell of ozone and cheap cigars. My name is Miller, and I don't believe in sacrifice. Sacrifice is just a fancy word for losing.

I had spent ten years infiltrating the "Void-Watch," a clandestine group of astrophysicists who had discovered the same thing the government was trying to hide: the Carbon Federation was coming, and they were bringing a cosmic eraser.

The Federation didn't want a "good" civilization. They wanted a "stable" one. And in their cold, alien logic, stability was defined by the ability to survive.

I found the sequence—the mathematical proof of intelligence—but I didn't plan on giving it to the world. I planned on using it as a leash.

I chose a kid named Leo. Twenty years old, desperate, and completely invisible to the system. I didn't teach him the truth; I taught him a lie. I gave him a modified version of the sequence, one that didn't signal "We are a peaceful, intelligent species." Instead, it signaled "We are a predatory, high-entropy species with a penchant for systemic destruction."

"Repeat this," I told him, my voice a low growl. "When the signal hits, you broadcast this. Don't ask why. Just do it if you want to keep breathing."

Leo was the bait. I was the angler.

When the Federation's probe pierced the atmosphere, it didn't find a choir of saints or a collection of scholars. It found a signal that screamed danger. It detected a civilization that looked, on paper, like a galactic plague—a species so aggressive and unstable that any attempt to "cleanse" them would result in an unpredictable, violent reaction that might damage the Federation's own ships.

The High Inquisitor paused. The logic was simple: the risk of intervention outweighed the benefit of erasure.

"Mark the sector as 'Hazardous/Unstable'," the Inquisitor ordered. "Leave them to their own chaos. We will return in another million years to see if they've managed to kill themselves."

The probe vanished. The sky returned to its usual, smoggy grey.

Leo looked at me, his eyes wide with confusion. "Did we save the world, Mr. Miller?"

I lit a cigar and leaned back in my chair, watching the smoke curl toward the ceiling.

"No, kid," I said. "We just convinced the landlord that the tenants are too crazy to evict."
