The Golden Ticket to Nowhere
Kane didn't believe in the beauty of the spire. To him, the Water-Mountain was just a very large, very wet obstacle between him and a paycheck.
In the neon-drenched sprawl of New York, the summit of the spire had become the most valuable piece of real estate in the history of the species. The 'Ark-Ticket'—a singular, gravitational key that allowed one person to board the Void-Sower's interior—was rumored to be waiting at the peak.
Kane was a 'Cleaner'. He was paid by the Zenith Corporation to ensure that no one else reached the top.
He swam through the liquid slope with a predatory efficiency, his movements precise and lethal. He didn't swim alone; he hunted. Every few hundred feet, he encountered another climber—a desperate scientist, a weeping mother, a delusional poet. He didn't kill them with weapons; he simply used the spire's own currents to push them into the crushing depths of the lower slopes.
"Nothing personal," Kane whispered, watching a young man sink into the blue abyss. "Just business."
As he neared the summit, Kane felt a surge of triumph. He could almost taste the sterile air of the Ark. He could almost feel the luxury of a world where he no longer had to kill for a living.
But as he stepped onto the mirror-surface of the peak, he found the Ark-Ticket. It was a small, pulsing sphere of light. He reached for it, and the moment his fingers touched the surface, the ticket spoke.
It wasn't a voice; it was a contract.
The Zenith Corporation hadn't hired him to win the ticket. They had hired him to deliver the ticket back to the entity. The ticket wasn't a pass for a human; it was a beacon. By bringing it to the summit, Kane had just signaled the entity that the 'cleaning' process was complete and the planet was ready for final deletion.
The ticket began to glow, and Kane felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest. He looked down to see a small, metallic spike erupting from his own skin. The device he had been carrying as a 'security measure' was actually a detonator.
Kane looked up at the Void-Sower and laughed. It was a dry, hacking sound. He had spent his whole life cleaning up other people's messes, only to find out that he was the final piece of trash to be discarded.
