The Observation Deck

The station was a circle of white light orbiting a dead Earth. Inside, the air was recycled and smelled of ozone and sterility. Julian was the "Curator" of the Observation Deck, the man responsible for monitoring the "Humanity Experiment" below.

The experiment was simple: a world of absolute inequality, managed by a secret society of elites who believed they were the shepherds of the species. For centuries, the Curator had watched them perform the "Wealth Liquidation," killing off the most destitute to optimize the survival index for the Arrival.

"It's a fascinating study in cognitive dissonance," the High Observer had remarked, pointing to the screens. "Look at how they justify the murder of the poor as an act of supreme altruism. They truly believe they are saving the world by deleting the people who make the world worth saving."

Julian's favorite subject was a woman in the ruins of a city called London. She was a scavenger, a "zero" in the system. She had refused every offer of wealth, every attempt to "raise" her baseline. She lived in the cracks of the world, painting murals of the stars on the walls of abandoned tunnels.

For years, Julian had watched her. He had become obsessed with her refusal. In a universe of calculated values, her "zero" was the only absolute truth.

The day of the Arrival came, but not as the elites below expected. There were no silver ships, no benevolent allocations. There was only the "Great Harvest."

The Star-Kin didn't want a balanced society. They wanted the *intensity* of human emotion. They fed on the friction between the highest and the lowest, the agony of the betrayed and the ecstasy of the triumphant. The "Wealth Liquidation" had been a disaster; by smoothing out the social landscape, the elites had effectively starved the Visitors.

"The crop is thin," the High Observer sighed, looking at the plummeting energy readings. "Too much equity. Not enough pain."

The Star-Kin decided to "stimulate" the harvest. They didn't kill the poor; they gave them everything. In a single heartbeat, every pauper on Earth became a billionaire. The wealth of the elites was redistributed with a violent, instantaneous precision.

Julian watched the screens as the world exploded into chaos. The elites, now the new "zeros," began to scream and beg. The poor, suddenly burdened with the weight of a world they didn't know how to run, fell into a different kind of despair.

The energy readings spiked. The harvest was finally beginning.

Julian looked at the woman in London. She was still painting her stars, oblivious to the gold raining from the sky. She was the only one who remained unchanged.

"Perfect," Julian whispered, and he opened the airlock, stepping out into the void to join the only person in the universe who was truly free.
