The White Room

(Dirty Realism Style)

The room was white. The walls, the floor, the ceiling—all a blinding, sterile white that made my eyes ache. There were no corners, just soft curves that made me feel like I was inside a giant egg.

I am Caleb. I don't remember my last name. I don't remember the trial. I only remember the feeling of a cold cuff on my wrist and the sound of a heavy door locking behind me.

Every day, a man comes. He calls himself The Architect. He wears a grey suit and carries a tablet. He doesn't ask me questions; he gives me "scenarios."

"Imagine you are in a city," he says. "You find a secret. You try to tell the world. What do you do?"

He plugs me into a machine—a set of electrodes that press against my temples. Suddenly, I am not in the white room. I am in a bustling street, feeling the wind on my face, smelling the exhaust of cars. I feel the rush of adrenaline, the fear, the hope. I spend what feels like years in these simulations, fighting a corrupt government, uncovering a conspiracy, becoming a hero of the people.

And then, snap. I am back in the white room.

"Interesting," The Architect says, scribbling something on his tablet. "In version 42, you chose to betray your partner to save yourself. In version 43, you died in a hail of bullets. Your moral decay is progressing faster than the previous subject."

It took me six months to realize that the simulations weren't a window into the universe. They were a mirror of my own breaking point. The Architect wasn't showing me the truth; he was testing how much pressure it took to turn a man of principle into a coward.

The "conspiracy" I was fighting in the simulations was a fake. The "truth" I was uncovering was a script. I was just a rat in a maze, and the maze was designed to prove that every human being has a price.

One day, I stopped playing. When he plugged me in, I didn't fight the corrupt officials. I didn't seek the truth. I just sat down on the simulated sidewalk and closed my eyes. I refused to move. I refused to choose.

"What are you doing?" The Architect asked, his voice sounding annoyed.

"I'm opting out," I whispered.

He looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and disgust. He realized that he couldn't break me if I stopped caring about the game. But in this place, silence is the only crime they can't tolerate.

He didn't take me out of the room. He just turned up the lights. He left me in the white, blinding glare, with no scenarios, no stories, and no hope. Just the sound of my own breathing, echoing in a space where the only truth was that I was no longer useful.
