The Verse of Bone

The Blackwood Estate did not sit upon the land; it haunted it. Surrounded by weeping willows and a humidity that felt like a wet blanket, the house was a decaying carcass of Victorian ambition. Clara had returned to the estate after twenty years, not out of love, but out of a morbid necessity to settle her father's estate.

In the attic, beneath a layer of dust that looked like grey snow, Clara found a slim volume titled *The Verses*. It was a collection of poems written by her grandmother, a woman who had been locked in the east wing for three decades before her death.

At first glance, the poems were breathtakingly beautiful. They spoke of moonlight on the marshes, the scent of jasmine in the rain, and the eternal nature of longing. But as Clara read deeper, she noticed a disturbing pattern. Each poem ended with a specific, seemingly random set of numbers and a geographical coordinate.

*The white lily blooms where the silence is deepest / 32.4, -89.1 / The root drinks from the salt of the earth.*

Clara, a woman of logic and science, began to map the coordinates. They didn't point to scenic vistas or hidden gardens. They pointed to the perimeter of the estate—specifically, to the areas where the soil was unnaturally sunken.

Armed with a shovel and a flashlight, Clara followed the "poetry" into the woods. At the first coordinate, she found a rusted locket and a human finger bone. At the second, a silk ribbon tied around a shattered jawbone. The poems were not expressions of love; they were a map of a graveyard.

She realized that her grandmother hadn't been "insane." She had been a witness. The poems were a coded confession, a way to record the murders committed by the men of the Blackwood family without alerting them. The "beauty" of the verse was a camouflage, a way to hide the horror in plain sight.

The final poem in the book was unfinished. It described a "final resting place" located directly beneath the floorboards of the attic where Clara now stood.

As the wind howled through the eaves of the house, Clara looked down at the floor. She could almost hear the rhythmic scratching of fingernails against wood, a desperate, poetic plea for recognition. She didn't call the police immediately. She sat in the dark, reading the poems again, realizing that the most beautiful things in her family's history were the ones that had been fed with blood.

She burned the house down that night. She didn't want to erase the crime; she wanted to give the bones the only thing they had ever been denied: a proper fire.
