The Absurdity of Truth

The hallway of the Blackwood Manor was a loop. I knew this because I had passed the same painting of a weeping willow seven times in the last hour. My name is Devon, and I am searching for the room where my father kept the truth.

The truth, I was told, was a physical object—a ledger, a key, a single piece of paper that would explain why I existed. But the manor had a peculiar way of rearranging itself. Every time I found a door that looked promising, it led back to the kitchen, or to a garden where the flowers grew in reverse, blooming from the soil into seeds.

I possessed what I called "the power of the glitch." Sometimes, I could walk through a wall, but only if I closed my eyes and hummed a specific tune. Other times, I could hear the conversations of people who had died a century ago, though they only ever talked about the price of wool in 1820.

I met Alexander in the library. He was reading a book that had no words, only a series of dots that shifted as he looked at them.

"Have you found it?" he asked, his voice sounding like it was coming from the bottom of a well.

"The truth?" I asked. "I found a letter yesterday that said my father was a king in a country that doesn't exist. Then I found a birth certificate that said I was born to a woman who died ten years before I was conceived."

Alexander nodded. "The truth is a variable. It changes depending on which door you use to enter the room."

We spent days wandering the corridors, documenting the contradictions. We found a room filled with clocks that all ticked at different speeds, and a staircase that led to the ceiling. We realized that the "Guardians" were not protectors of a secret, but prisoners of a paradox. They were tasked with guarding a truth that had long since dissolved into absurdity.

The climax occurred when I finally found the room. It was a small, white space with a single pedestal in the center. On the pedestal lay a mirror.

I looked into the mirror and saw not my reflection, but a version of myself that was happy. He was living in a small house by the sea, far away from the manor and its loops. He looked at me with a mixture of pity and boredom.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"I am the version of you that stopped searching," the reflection replied. "The truth is that there is no ledger. There is no secret heritage. There is only the search. The search is the only thing that is real."

The mirror shattered. The room vanished. I found myself standing in the garden, the weeping willow painting now hanging on a tree. I looked at Alexander, who was now a small bird perched on my shoulder.

"Do we go back?" the bird asked.

"Back where?" I replied.

I realized then that the search was not a path to a destination, but a circle. I sat down on the grass and watched the clouds form shapes of things I had forgotten. I didn't need a truth. I only needed the loop.
