The Station of Echoes

The subway station was called 42nd Street, but for me, it was the center of the universe. It was a place of white tiles, flickering fluorescent lights, and the smell of ozone and old urine. I have no name that matters anymore; I am simply the man who cleans the ghosts.

Every morning at 5:15 AM, before the first wave of commuters arrives, I walk the platforms with a specialized vacuum and a bottle of chemical solvent. I don't hunt monsters. I don't fight demons. I simply erase the "residue"—the shimmering, translucent stains left behind by human terror.

A woman who had a panic attack in the tunnel leaves a smudge of jagged yellow. A man who had a heart attack while clutching his briefcase leaves a heavy, leaden grey. A couple who had a devastating argument leaves a streak of caustic red.

For years, I believed my work was a service. I thought that by cleaning the stations, I was making the city a safer, calmer place. I believed that the residue was an external pollutant, a supernatural waste product that needed to be managed.

Then I met the Void.

It wasn't a ghost. It was a gap—a hole in the air that appeared near the turnstiles every Tuesday. It didn't scream or haunt; it simply existed. When I tried to clean it, the solvent didn't work. The vacuum just sucked in air. I spent three months trying to "fix" the hole, treating it like any other glitch.

One day, I stopped fighting. I sat down on the dirty tiles and looked into the gap. And for the first time, I didn't see a monster. I saw myself.

I saw a version of me that had never taken this job. I saw a version of me that had stayed in my hometown, married the girl I loved, and died in a bed of linen. I saw a thousand other versions of me, all living different lives, all equally terrified, all leaving their own residue in their own versions of the world.

I realized then that the ghosts aren't visitors. They are projections. The residue isn't something that happens *to* the station; it is the station's only honest expression. The city is not a place of steel and stone; it is a map of human suffering.

I stopped using the chemicals. I stopped using the vacuum. Now, I just walk the platforms and watch the stains grow. I watch the commuters step right through the jagged yellow of someone else's panic, oblivious to the fact that they are carrying their own smudge of grey behind them.

The Void is still there. Sometimes, I whisper my secrets into it, and the Void whispers back in a thousand different voices. It tells me that the struggle to be "clean" is the greatest joke of all. We are all just residues, flickering for a moment in the fluorescent light of a subway station, before we are finally swept away by the wind.
