Neon Noir: The Zero Sum

The rain in the city of Chronos didn't wash anything away; it just smeared the neon lights into a greasy kaleidoscope of blue and pink. In Chronos, you didn't pay for coffee with credits; you paid with minutes. Your lifespan was a digital ticker on your wrist, a glowing countdown that told you exactly how much time you had left before you became a "Zero."

I'm a recovery agent. That's a fancy word for a thief who steals time from people who don't deserve it.

My latest mark was a ghost named Julian. He had pulled off the heist of the century, stealing a full century of "Prime Time" from the Central Chronos Bank. A hundred years of life, condensed into a single, shimmering data-shard. The Bank wanted it back, and they were paying me in decades to find him.

I tracked Julian to a dive bar in the Sinks, the lowest level of the city where the Zeros huddled in the shadows, waiting for their tickers to hit zero. Julian didn't look like a mastermind; he looked like a man who had seen the end of the world and found it boring.

"I'm not keeping it, detective," Julian said, sliding the shard across the scarred metal table. "I'm distributing it."

He had been leaking the time into the Sinks, giving an extra hour here, a day there, to the people who were minutes away from death. He was trying to buy a few more breaths for the forgotten.

As I held the shard, I felt the weight of it. A hundred years. I could use it to buy my way out of the Sinks, to move to the Spire where the sun actually touched the buildings. I could live forever.

But then I saw the city's architecture. The Spire wasn't just a building; it was a pump. It sucked the time out of the Sinks to keep the elite immortal. The "Prime Time" in the bank wasn't created; it was stolen. The city's stability depended on a permanent underclass of Zeros. If Julian gave the time back, the pump would fail, the Spire would collapse, and the resulting temporal shock would kill millions in an instant.

It was a simple equation: the lives of a few thousand Zeros versus the survival of the city.

I didn't give the shard back to the bank. I didn't give it to the poor. I waited until Julian looked me in the eyes, and then I crushed the shard under my boot.

The time dissipated into the rain, a useless shimmer of light. Julian laughed—a dry, hacking sound. He had forced me to be the executioner of his dream and the savior of a nightmare.

I walked back into the rain, my own ticker counting down. I had saved the city, and in doing so, I had ensured that the misery would continue exactly as it always had.
