The Mist of Aethelgard

The island of Aethelgard was a jagged tooth of black basalt rising from the freezing waters of the North Atlantic. It was a place of eternal mist and screaming winds, where the only inhabitants were a few dozen villagers and the ghosts of the First Age.

The villagers lived in fear of the "Triumvirate of Shadows"—three ancient curses that had been bound to the island's soil. The Curse of the Blind, the Curse of the Silent, and the Curse of the Forgotten.

For centuries, the villagers had maintained a fragile balance, performing rituals to keep the curses dormant. But the balance was shifting. The mist was growing thicker, and the shadows were beginning to move.

Elias was the island's chronicler, a man who spent his life studying the ancient runes carved into the cliffs. He discovered that the curses were not random; they were a "Three-Body" system of spiritual energy. If one curse grew too strong, it would pull the others toward it, eventually triggering a "Convergence."

The island was a Dark Forest of the soul. Every ritual, every prayer, was a desperate attempt to hide the village's presence from the shadows.

"The Convergence is coming," Elias warned the village council. "The shadows are no longer dormant. They are hunting."

The "Collapse" began when the youngest daughter of the chief, Clara, accidentally broke the Seal of the Forgotten. The mist didn't just surround the village; it entered their lungs, their minds, their dreams.

The villagers began to vanish. Not by death, but by erasure. One by one, people were forgotten by those who loved them. A mother would look at her son and see a stranger; a husband would wake up next to a woman he had never met.

The Convergence reached its peak on the night of the blood moon. The three curses merged into a single, overwhelming force. The island began to flatten. The cliffs crumbled, the houses sank, and the very dimensions of space began to warp.

Elias stood on the highest peak, watching as the world became a painting. He saw the village, the sea, and the sky being pressed into a single, featureless plane of grey.

He felt a strange, terrifying beauty in the destruction. It was a poetic end—a world that had lived in fear of the shadows finally becoming one with them.

As the last sliver of the island vanished beneath the waves, Elias closed his eyes. He was no longer a man, no longer a chronicler. He was just a ripple in the mist, a forgotten memory in a forgotten world.
