The Gallery of the Absurd (New York Modernism)

The Prism Institute was the most fashionable place to lose one's mind in Manhattan. It was a sanctuary of white lacquer, floating staircases, and a strict dress code of linen and silk. Clement, a former avant-garde painter whose work had once scandalized the MoMA, was the institute's most celebrated resident.

Clement didn't suffer from depression or schizophrenia; he suffered from "excessive perception." He saw the world as a series of overlapping geometric planes, a chaotic collage of color and sound that made ordinary life impossible.

The Director of the Prism, a woman named Elara who spoke in aphorisms and wore architectural jewelry, had proposed a daring experiment. She turned Clement's treatment into a permanent art installation titled *The Architecture of Collapse*.

"Your madness is not a disease, Clement," Elara had told him, her eyes gleaming with a predatory intellectualism. "It is a medium. We are not curing you; we are curating you."

Clement's life became a series of "performances." His morning medication was administered as a ritual of "chromatic adjustment." His therapy sessions were recorded and projected onto the walls of the gallery for a rotating audience of New York's elite. The visitors whispered about his "bravery" and the "raw honesty" of his breakdowns.

Clement leaned into the role. He began to choreograph his hallucinations, turning his panic attacks into carefully timed crescendos of movement and sound. He became a celebrity of the void, the man who could make madness look like a choice.

But one evening, during a gala opening, Clement noticed something. He saw a visitor in the crowd—a man who looked exactly like him, dressed in the same linen suit, moving with the same precise, angular gait.

The man approached him and whispered, "The lighting in the third room is too harsh. It ruins the effect of the despair."

Clement froze. He realized that he was not the artist, nor the subject. He was just one of several "Clements" being rotated through the gallery to ensure the installation never stopped. When one Clement became too stable or too broken, he was replaced by a fresh version, a new canvas for the Director's vision.

He looked at the audience, their faces blurred by the gallery's lighting, and realized they weren't looking at him. They were looking at the *idea* of him.

He began to laugh—a loud, jagged sound that broke the curated silence of the room. He danced a wild, discordant jig, knocking over a sculpture of a frozen tear. The audience applauded, believing it was part of the performance.

Clement smiled, a thin, sharp expression. If he was to be a piece of art, he decided he would be a piece of art that screamed.
