The Art of the Void

The clock on the wall ticked. It was a cheap plastic thing, bought at a pharmacy in Queens.

"Do you want tea?" Elena asked.

"Yes," Mark replied.

They were sitting in their kitchen. The light was a pale, sterile yellow. Outside, the sky had turned a flat, matte white. There were no clouds, no sun, just a void that had replaced the horizon.

The news had stopped broadcasting three days ago. The last image had been a simple text scroll: *The Sifting has begun. Please remain calm. Enjoy your loved ones.*

Mark looked at his hands. They were steady. He wondered if he should have called his mother in Ohio, but he knew the lines were dead. He wondered if Ohio still existed.

"The tea is ready," Elena said. She placed two mugs on the table.

They sat in silence. The silence was not heavy; it was empty. It was the kind of silence that happens when you realize that the concept of "tomorrow" has been deleted from the dictionary.

Mark noticed a small crack in the kitchen tile. He spent ten minutes staring at it, tracing the jagged line with his eyes. He thought about the millions of people currently screaming in the streets of Manhattan, and he felt a strange, distant curiosity. Why were they screaming? The process was so clean.

"I remember the beach in Maine," Elena said. Her voice was a flat line. "The way the salt felt on my skin."

"I remember the smell of old books," Mark replied.

They didn't touch. They didn't cry. They simply existed in the narrow slice of time that remained.

At 4:12 PM, the kitchen table began to fade. Not dissolve, but lose its saturation. The brown wood became a pale tan, then a ghostly white, then a transparent shimmer.

"Oh," Elena said.

Mark looked at his tea. The liquid was now a shimmering, iridescent silver. He took a sip. It tasted like nothing. Not water, not air, but the absolute absence of flavor.

The walls of the apartment began to slide away, revealing a vast, white expanse that stretched in every direction. There were no buildings, no streets, no people. Just a white void and the two of them, sitting in two plastic chairs.

"Is this it?" Mark asked.

"I think so," Elena replied.

They sat there for a while, watching the chairs slowly turn into light. Mark reached out and took Elena's hand. Her skin felt like warm glass.

"I'm glad it's you," he whispered.

"Me too," she said.

Then, the light expanded, and the white void became a perfect, silent zero.
