The Signal of the Damned

The penthouse office overlooked the skyline of Manhattan, a glittering grid of gold and glass. I poured myself a drink—neat, no ice—and looked at the transcript on my desk.

My name is Agent X. In the world of intelligence, I am the man who finds the things that aren't supposed to exist.

Two weeks ago, the NSA and the GRU both picked up the same signal. It wasn't a random burst of noise; it was a structured, high-bandwidth transmission coming from the Boötes Void. It took three days to decrypt.

The message was a single sentence, repeated in every known mathematical language: "The harvest is scheduled for the next galactic rotation."

The panic in the Situation Room had been palpable. Generals were screaming for orbital defenses; scientists were weeping in the corners. But I saw the opportunity.

I didn't tell my superiors the full truth. I told them the signal was a riddle, a test of intelligence. I convinced the US government that if we could "answer" the signal with a specific set of coordinates, we could negotiate a treaty of non-aggression. Meanwhile, I leaked a slightly different version of the signal to the Russians, suggesting that the "harvest" only applied to those who didn't possess a certain frequency of shielding.

Within a month, the Cold War had shifted. It was no longer about missiles or ideology; it was a frantic, desperate race to build a "shield" that didn't exist.

I watched from my office as the two superpowers poured trillions of dollars into useless alloys and fake frequencies. They were so terrified of the "harvest" that they stopped fighting each other and started competing to be the most "protected" victim.

I sat back and sipped my scotch. The irony was delicious. The signal wasn't a threat; it was a mirror. The "harvest" was a metaphor for the natural decay of civilizations. The universe doesn't send reapers; it just waits for you to destroy yourself.

By giving them a fake way to survive, I had given them a reason to keep working, to keep producing, to keep the world running. I had turned a cosmic death sentence into a global economic stimulus package.

My phone rang. It was the Director. "X, the Russians just claimed they've achieved 90% shielding. We need to increase our output."

"I'm on it, sir," I said, smiling.

I hung up and looked out at the city. Millions of people were living their lives, unaware that their entire world was being run by a lie about a signal from a void.

Truth is a luxury. Survival is a business. And business was booming.
