The Biological Battery

The sky over the lairs was the color of a bruised plum, thick with the soot of a thousand smelting plants. Maurice lived in the "Sump," a subterranean slum where the air was a soup of sulfur and recycled sweat. He spent his days scavenging for "Old-World" copper in the ruins of a city that had forgotten its own name.

The world was at peace. That was what the "Overseers" told them from the floating citadels. The "Great Deterrent" had worked. The Void-Threat had been neutralized, and in exchange, humanity had accepted the "Stability Pact."

The Pact was simple: the Overseers provided food, medicine, and a guaranteed lack of war. In return, every citizen had to wear a "Sync-Band" on their wrist.

"It's for the harmony," the Overseers said. "The band stabilizes your emotions, preventing the kind of chaos that would attract the predators of the void."

Maurice hated the band. It didn't feel like harmony; it felt like a leash. Whenever he felt a spark of anger, a surge of passion, or a moment of genuine grief, the band would vibrate, sending a numbing pulse of serotonin through his veins, flattening his soul into a grey, compliant plane.

One day, while digging through a collapsed data-center, Maurice found a broken Sync-Band. He spent months tinkering with it, using salvaged parts and a stolen soldering iron. He managed to create a "Null-Patch"—a small device that could temporarily jam the signal of his own band.

The moment he activated the patch, the world rushed back in.

The smell of the Sump became unbearable. The grey walls of the slum felt like they were closing in. But for the first time in years, he felt *something*. He felt a jagged, piercing hatred for the Overseers.

He used the patch to infiltrate the "Core-Hub," the place where the Sync-Bands were managed. He expected to find a weapon, a shield, or a communication array.

Instead, he found a farm.

The Hub was a massive network of capacitors, and the Sync-Bands weren't stabilizers—they were electrodes. The "harmony" the Overseers provided was actually a method of harvesting. The bands captured the raw, chaotic energy of human emotion—the spikes of fear, the depths of sorrow, the heat of rage—and converted it into a stable, high-density power source.

The "Void-Threat" was a lie. There were no predators in the stars.

The Overseers weren't protecting humanity; they were ranching them. The "Stability Pact" was just a way to ensure the "crop" didn't burn itself out too quickly. The peace was the optimal temperature for energy extraction.

Maurice stood in the center of the Hub, surrounded by the humming machinery of his own enslavement. He looked at the thousands of bands pulsing in unison, a heartbeat of a billion stolen emotions.

He could destroy the Hub. He could wake everyone up.

But as he looked at the starving, broken people in the Sump, he realized the horror of the choice. If he destroyed the Hub, the "harmony" would vanish. The sudden return of a billion repressed traumas, a billion years of accumulated grief, would trigger a global psychotic break. The world wouldn't be free; it would be a slaughterhouse.

Maurice deactivated the patch.

The grey numbness returned, sliding over his mind like a cold sheet. He walked back to the Sump, his steps rhythmic and empty.

He sat in the mud, looked up at the purple sky, and felt a flicker of something—a memory of hatred—before the band vibrated, and he smiled a perfect, empty smile.
