The Unwitting Predators

The rain in Neo-Casablanca didn't fall; it leaked from a grey, suffocating sky, smelling of ozone and old regrets. Jack sat in his office, a space that smelled of cheap cigars and expensive desperation. He was a "Void-Sweeper," a specialized contractor hired to clean up the psychic debris left behind by the government's failed attempts to contact the stars.

Jack didn't believe in aliens. He believed in the rent, the bottle of rye in his desk, and the fact that everyone has a price.

His latest job was a "Deep-Clean" of a decommissioned listening post in the wastes. The government had shut it down after a series of "catastrophic failures," and they wanted every scrap of data erased.

While scrubbing the servers, Jack found a hidden partition. It contained a series of recordings—not from the aliens, but from the humans who had been operating the post.

The recordings were screams. Not screams of pain, but screams of absolute, blinding terror.

"It's not a signal!" one voice shrieked. "It's a mirror! Every time we send a 'Hello,' we aren't communicating—we're detonating!"

Jack frowned. He played the next file. It was a mathematical analysis of the human voice. It turned out that the unique structure of human consciousness, when broadcasted across the void, acted as a high-frequency sonic weapon. A simple "I love you" sent from Earth was, to any other civilization, the equivalent of a supernova exploding in their living room.

Humanity wasn't the prey. They weren't the victims of a "Dark Forest."

They were the monsters.

Every "peaceful" attempt at contact had been a massacre. Every "hopeful" broadcast had wiped out entire star systems. The "Great Silence" of the universe wasn't a sign of predation; it was a sign of absolute, paralyzed fear. The rest of the galaxy was hiding from *them*.

The "attacks" the government had reported—the mysterious disappearances of probes, the sudden bursts of radiation—weren't offensive strikes. They were the desperate, last-ditch efforts of dying civilizations trying to put out the fire that humanity had accidentally started.

Jack leaned back in his chair, the rye tasting like ash in his mouth.

He looked at the "Transmit" button on the console. One press, and he could send a final, comprehensive data-dump of Earth's history to the rest of the galaxy. A gesture of openness. A hand extended in friendship.

He imagined the result: a billion worlds screaming in agony as the "friendship" signal tore through their atmospheres.

Jack didn't press the button. Instead, he took a heavy sledgehammer from his toolkit and began to smash the console, piece by piece.

He didn't do it to save the aliens. He did it because he couldn't stand the thought of being the one to pull the trigger.
