The Shadow of the God

Mike lived in a world of grey suits and stale coffee. As a Senior Agent for the Department of Existential Security, his job was simple: he was the shadow. He spent eighteen hours a day in a nondescript van parked outside a brownstone in Upper East Side, watching a man named Julian.

To the world, Julian was a disgraced academic. To the DES, he was the "Apex"—the only human mind capable of conceptualizing a strategic defense against the Void. Julian had been given total autonomy, a limitless budget, and the title of "Savior."

Mike’s job was to make sure the Savior didn't snap.

"Day 412," Mike whispered into his recorder. "Subject is currently drinking scotch and staring at a blank wall. No signs of mental collapse. Still refuses to share the details of the 'Shield' with the Oversight Committee."

Mike hated Julian. He hated the way Julian looked at the world with a mixture of pity and boredom. He hated the way the government treated Julian like a god while treating agents like Mike like disposable furniture.

But as the months passed, Mike noticed a change. The "Savior" was becoming a monster.

It started with the "Necessary Sacrifices." Julian requested the removal of certain "noise elements" from his perimeter. First, it was a nosy neighbor. Then, a junior researcher who had asked too many questions. The DES handled the disappearances with a shrug and a signature.

"It's for the greater good, Mike," the Director had told him. "If Julian's focus is broken for even a second, we all die. A few lives are a fair price for the survival of the species."

Mike watched through the long-lens camera as Julian stopped staring at the wall and started staring at the void. The man's eyes had become cold, two pieces of obsidian that reflected nothing. He no longer spoke of saving humanity; he spoke of "curating" it.

One night, Julian summoned Mike into the house. It was the first time the subject had acknowledged the shadow.

"Do you know what a god is, Mike?" Julian asked, his voice a dry rasp.

"A myth, sir," Mike replied, standing at attention.

"No," Julian smiled, and it was the most terrifying thing Mike had ever seen. "A god is someone who has the courage to decide who deserves to exist. The Shield is ready, Mike. But it doesn't protect everyone. It only protects those who are... useful."

Mike looked at the list on the table. It was a directory of names. His own name was not on it.

He realized then that the "Savior" hadn't built a shield to protect humanity from the void. He had built a filter to protect himself from the useless.

Mike reached for his holster, but he didn't draw. He just looked at the man in the expensive suit and felt a profound, crushing exhaustion. He realized that the void wasn't coming from the stars. It had already arrived, and it was wearing a tailored blazer.
