The Rot of the Ancestors

The estate of Blackwood sat in the heart of a planetary swamp, a sprawling ruin of gothic arches and weeping willows. The family that owned it, the Van der Holts, had ruled the system for ten thousand years, but their empire was now a skeleton. The "Devourer" was not an external enemy; it was the family's own shadow, a void-entity born from the greed of their ancestors.

Julian Van der Holt was the last of the line. He lived in the attic of the manor, surrounded by the decaying portraits of his forefathers. Every portrait had the same eyes—cold, hungry, and devoid of light.

The Void was growing. It started as a small black spot in the center of the ballroom, but now it was a yawning maw that swallowed entire wings of the house. The servants had long since fled, leaving Julian alone with the whispers of the dead.

The family secret was simple: the Van der Holts had traded the souls of their subjects for eternal power. But the debt had come due. The Void was the collector, and it was coming for the last heir.

Julian spent his days trying to negotiate with the shadow. He offered it the family jewels, the ancient libraries, the remaining lands. But the Void didn't want things; it wanted the blood of the line.

One night, Julian discovered a hidden diary in the cellar. It revealed that the only way to stop the Void was to commit an act of true, selfless sacrifice—something no Van der Holt had done in ten millennia. The family's power was built on the principle of "Take," and the only cure was to "Give."

As the Void reached the attic door, Julian looked at the portrait of his father. He saw the hunger in those eyes and felt a sudden, piercing disgust. He realized that his entire existence was just a continuation of a crime.

He didn't fight the shadow. Instead, he opened the doors of the manor and called out to the refugees hiding in the swamps. He gave them the keys to the estate, the remaining food, and the last of the family's medicine. He spent his final hours helping the displaced find shelter in the ruins of his own home.

The Void entered the room. It didn't attack; it simply enveloped him. As Julian was pulled into the darkness, he felt a strange lightness. For the first time in ten thousand years, a Van der Holt had given something away.

The manor collapsed into the swamp, the black spot finally closing. The refugees built a new village on the ruins, a place where the land was finally clean. They never knew who Julian was, but they called the site "The Field of Grace," the only place in the system where the shadow no longer fell.
