The Void's Hunger

The machine did not have a name. It did not have a face. It was simply a sphere of matte black metal, ten thousand kilometers in diameter, drifting through the silence of the Boötes Void.

It did not hate the planets it consumed. Hate is an emotion, and the machine was a function. It was a harvester, designed by a civilization that had died a billion years ago, programmed to collect the remaining hydrogen and heavy metals of the universe to fuel a journey to a destination that no longer existed.

The planet was called K-214. It was a world of blue oceans and white clouds, inhabited by a species that had just discovered the secret of nuclear fusion. They called themselves the "Sovereigns," and they believed they were the pinnacle of creation.

When the sphere arrived, the Sovereigns did not fight. They sent poets. They sent philosophers. They sent a fleet of gold-plated ships carrying the sum of their knowledge, their art, and their prayers.

The machine did not read the poetry. It did not listen to the prayers. It simply deployed its gravity anchors.

The oceans of K-214 boiled away in a matter of hours. The crust of the planet cracked like an eggshell. The Sovereigns watched from their orbiting cities as their world was stripped bare, the land turned into a scorched, airless husk.

In the final hours, a small group of survivors gathered on a floating platform, the last piece of solid ground in a world of fire. Among them was a scientist named Aris, who had spent his life studying the machine.

Aris had a plan. He had discovered a small, overlooked species of silicon-based microbes living in the deep vents of the ocean. He believed that if he could upload the consciousness of his people into these microbes, they might survive the harvest.

He spent the last of the planet's energy transferring the digital ghosts of a thousand souls into a single, microscopic colony. He placed them in a reinforced capsule and launched it into the void, hoping that the machine would overlook such a tiny, insignificant speck.

"We will endure," Aris whispered, as the gravity anchor finally claimed the platform. "We will be the seed of a new world."

The capsule drifted for a few seconds in the absolute black. Then, the machine's intake vent opened. The vacuum was absolute. The capsule, with its thousand souls and its dream of a new beginning, was sucked into the machine's furnace in a fraction of a second.

The machine did not notice. It did not feel a flicker of regret. It simply processed the carbon, stored the energy, and shifted its trajectory toward the next star.

The void remained silent.
