The Hollow Horizon

The sky was the color of a bruised plum, and the air tasted like wet copper.

They sat in a circle around a small, sputtering fire made of old plastic and dried scrub. There were five of them left in the camp—men and women whose skin had turned the same grey as the dust that covered everything. They didn't talk about the "Devourer" anymore. The word had become too heavy, a stone that sank any conversation into silence.

"Pass the tin," Miller said, his voice a dry rasp.

Sarah handed him the can of synthetic protein. It was thin, smelling of chemicals and old salt. They ate in silence, the only sound the distant, rhythmic thumping of the atmosphere being crushed. The horizon was no longer a line; it was a curve, the world bending under a gravity that didn't belong to Earth.

"I heard the ships in the North actually launched," a young man named Leo whispered. He was the only one who still had a spark of something in his eyes, though it looked more like fever than hope.

"Launched to where?" Miller asked without looking up. "There's nowhere to go. The sky is closed."

Leo didn't answer. He just stared at the grey void above. He had spent the last month trying to build a radio, hoping to hear a voice, a signal, any proof that they weren't the last living things in the universe. But the radio only produced a steady, humming static—the sound of the universe erasing itself.

As the sun set, it didn't dip below the horizon. It simply shrank, compressed by the approaching mass of the entity, until it became a tiny, white needle of light and then vanished.

The darkness that followed was absolute. It wasn't the darkness of night; it was the darkness of non-existence.

"I think I can smell the ocean," Sarah said suddenly.

They all froze. There was no ocean left. The water had been sucked into the void weeks ago. But as the ground began to heave and the first great cracks opened in the earth, they all smelled it—the salt, the brine, the cold deep. It wasn't a miracle. It was just the last gasp of the planet's crust being torn open.

Miller reached out and took Sarah's hand. His grip was weak, his fingers trembling. They didn't say goodbye. There was no point in words. They just sat there in the dark, listening to the sound of the world breaking, until the air simply stopped being there to carry the sound.
