## The Echo of a Dry Voice

I still remember the smell of Mr. Miller's classroom: a mixture of old chalk, peppermint tea, and the faint, metallic scent of the radiator that never quite worked. It was a small, windowless room in the basement of the 42nd Street Community Center, a place where the noise of New York City felt like a distant, angry ocean.

Mr. Miller was a small man, almost translucent, as if the city were slowly erasing him. He spoke in a dry, papery voice that sounded like autumn leaves being crushed underfoot. He didn't have a degree from a fancy university—at least, not one that still existed—but he had a way of making the universe feel like a puzzle that we were actually allowed to solve.

"Listen to the silence between the sounds, class," he would say, his eyes twinkling behind thick, cracked glasses. "That is where the laws live."

I remember the way his hands shook when he wrote the equations on the board. He was dying; we all knew it, though no one talked about it. He just got thinner, his skin becoming a map of blue veins, his breath becoming a series of short, jagged gasps. But when he talked about the laws of motion, he seemed to expand, filling the room with a sudden, electric energy.

The last day was a Tuesday. The radiator was clanking, and the rain was drumming against the sidewalk above us. Mr. Miller sat in his chair, looking more like a ghost than a man.

"One last time," he whispered. "The second law. For me."

We stood up, twelve of us, and recited the law in a fragile, trembling unison. I remember looking at him as we spoke. He wasn't looking at us; he was looking at something far beyond the basement walls, something we couldn't see. He looked... relieved.

When we finished, he simply closed his eyes. He didn't fall; he just seemed to drift away, like a piece of paper caught in a breeze.

I didn't know then that a beam of light from a thousand light-years away had just swept through our basement. I didn't know that our voices, echoing in that damp room, had just convinced a cold, alien intelligence that humanity was worth saving.

I only knew that the room felt suddenly empty, and that for the first time in my life, the silence of the city felt like a conversation.
