The Tide of Greed

The island of Orizon was a jewel in a forbidden sea, a place of iridescent sands and forests that glowed with a soft, bioluminescent blue. For generations, the islanders had lived in harmony with the tide, following the "Law of the Balance." They took only what they needed, and in return, the island provided everything. Then came Julian, the man who had forgotten the taste of salt.

Julian returned to Orizon after twenty years of studying the occult arts in the forbidden cities of the North. He didn't come back as a son; he came back as a conqueror. He brought with him a book bound in human skin, a grimoire that taught the art of "Absolute Extraction." He promised the islanders a life of unimaginable luxury, a world where they would never have to work again.

The transition was seductive. Julian taught them how to force the forest to grow ten times faster, how to extract gold from the iridescent sands, and how to command the tides to bring them treasures from the deep. For a year, Orizon became a paradise of excess. The villagers wore robes of spun glass and ate fruits that tasted of forgotten dreams.

But the Balance was not a suggestion; it was a physical law. The more Julian extracted, the more the island began to bleed. The blue forests turned a sickly, pale grey. The iridescent sands became a caustic sludge that burned the skin. The animals of the island began to mutate, their eyes turning into void-black pits of hunger.

The tension peaked when Julian attempted the "Final Extraction"—a ritual to pull the very core of the island's energy into a single, crystalline sphere. He believed that with this power, he could rewrite the laws of nature and become a god. The islanders, now addicted to the luxury he had provided, cheered him on, oblivious to the fact that the ground beneath their feet was beginning to liquefy.

As Julian raised the sphere, the sky turned a bruised, violent purple. A sound like a million screaming voices tore through the air. The ocean, which had been a servant to Julian's will, suddenly rose in a wall of black water a thousand feet high.

"The Balance is restored," a voice whispered from the depths of the tide.

The wave hit the island with the force of a falling mountain. In a single, thunderous moment, the glass palaces, the golden forests, and the greedy people were swept away. Julian clung to the sphere, his face twisted in a mask of horror, as the black water filled his lungs. He realized too late that the "Absolute Extraction" had not been a gift, but a trigger for a planetary reset.

The ocean settled. Where Orizon had once been, there was now only a vast, empty expanse of black water. No debris remained. No memory of the paradise survived.

A thousand years later, a sailor passed over that spot of the ocean. He looked down into the depths and saw a single, crystalline sphere glowing faintly in the dark. He reached for it, but a sudden, violent current pushed him away, as if the sea itself were warning him: some things are not meant to be owned.
