Ashes and Concrete

Ashes and Concrete I mop floors because it's the only job I can do with hands that shake. Detroit Receiving Hospital, third floor, 4 PM to midnight. Monday through Friday. Saturdays, if I'm lucky. The pay is seven dollars an hour, which is enough for a studio apartment in Hamtramck, a bus pass, and enough food to keep my daughter alive. Daniel says I'm wasting my intelligence on cleaning other people's messes. I tell him the floors don't care if I'm wasting anything. They just need to be clean. That's not entirely true. The floors do care, in their way. You can tell by the way they reflect the fluorescent lights when they're freshly mopped — a poor imitation of clarity, but clarity nonetheless.
