VARIANT SAMPLE: The Promise — Psychological Thriller

I need you to understand something before I tell you what happened to Professor Chen. I am not lying. I might be telling the truth. But the truth, in my experience, is not a single thing. It is a room with many mirrors, and each mirror shows a different version of the same face.

My name is Dr. Daniel Park. I am a neuroscientist. I study memory. And for the past three years, I have been the subject of my sister's clinical observations. Because I have a condition—a rare form of hyperthymesia combined with an unusual capacity for empathic resonance—that makes my memories vivid, permanent, and, at times, not entirely my own.

Dr. Helena Rossi understood this. She understood me better than I understood myself. She saw a broken boy from the South Side, raised in foster care, and she gave me something no one had ever given me: a future. She paid for my education. She wrote the letters of recommendation. She stayed up all night helping me prepare for my doctoral defense when my mother died and I had no one else.

And I promised to remember.

That's all I said. "I promise to remember."

It seemed so small. So simple. A grateful student to a generous mentor. But Dr. Rossi's research—the research I helped her conduct, the research I now believe was the real target of Edward Chen's investigation—was about something much larger than gratitude. It was about dependency. About the psychological mechanisms that make help into obligation and obligation into control.

Chen found out. He found out about the data manipulation, the IRB loopholes, the way we had been training subjects to associate gratitude with compliance. He was going to expose us.

I didn't kill him. I think. Or maybe I did. The memory is there—I can see it, perfectly, in all its terrible clarity—but it might be Dr. Rossi's memory, or it might be my sister's memory, or it might be a memory that was planted there by the very research Chen was trying to shut down.

I promise to remember. And that promise is the most dangerous thing I own.
