VARIANT SAMPLE: Mirror Souls — Psychological Thriller

I don't know which one of us did it. That's the thing I keep trying to tell Dr. Chen, but she won't stop looking at me like I'm supposed to know. Like I'm supposed to be able to tell the difference between my memories and his.

We're the Morrison twins. Alistair is three minutes older. That's what the birth certificate says. That's what matters in the world outside this room—the world of legal documents and legal responsibility and the neat little boxes that human beings like to stamp with verdicts. But inside—inside the space between us, inside the neural bridge that Dr. Vance built and we volunteered for—there are no boxes. There's only the shared space, the common ground where one memory can be mine and also his and neither of us is lying.

Dr. Chen set up the VR headset. "Let's go back to the night of the 14th, Edmund. Or should I say—shall we go back to the night of the 14th, Alistair? I'm not sure which one I'm talking to anymore."

I wanted to tell her that the question itself was the murder weapon. That Vance's technology didn't just share memories—it created a space where guilt couldn't be assigned, because in the shared space, guilt wasn't individual. It was collective. It was ours.

The headset went on. The world dissolved. And suddenly I was standing in Vance's lab again, watching my own hand—whose hand?—reach for the knife, watching my own eyes—whose eyes?—fill with something that wasn't rage or fear or even self-preservation. It was relief. The relief of a man who has carried a promise too long and finally sets it down.

When the headset came off, Dr. Chen was staring at me with something that wasn't quite horror. It was worse. It was understanding.

"I know which one of us did it," I said. And that was the lie. Or maybe it was the truth. In the Morrison twins, those words mean the same thing.
