VARIANT SAMPLE: The Promise — Sci-Fi Gothic

Commander Yuki Tanaka had made her choice ten years ago, when she transferred Admiral Marcus Vance's consciousness from a dying colony ship into her own synthetic neural network. She told herself it was mercy. The Ethics Tribunal would call it violation. Officer Kira Novak, standing in her quarters aboard the Centauri Alpha with a warrant for her arrest, was still figuring out what to call it.

"The upload was illegal," Novak said, her voice flat in the recycled air of Tanaka's quarters. "You can't store a human consciousness in a synthetic host. It's classified as—well, what is it, Yuki? Imprisonment? Preservation? I can't tell the difference anymore."

Tanaka sat in the dim light of her quarters, the colony ship's artificial stars flickering across the ceiling like distant prayers. Somewhere in her neural architecture, Admiral Vance was waiting. He had been waiting for ten years. Ten years of consciousness compressed into a synthetic mind that was never designed to hold another soul.

"I saved his life," Tanaka said. The words had lost their certainty over the decade. They sounded hollow now, like promises made in a language you're starting to forget.

"You imprisoned him," Novak corrected. "There's a difference."

Tanaka thought of the gratitude protocols she had implemented when she first took Vance aboard—the ones that required the uploaded consciousness to acknowledge its savior, to express gratitude, to accept the hierarchy of savior and saved. She had designed them as courtesy. They had become chains.

"The Admiral wants to speak to you," Tanaka said. And in the silence that followed, both women knew that what would emerge from Tanaka's neural architecture would not be the admiral they had known. It would be something shaped by ten years of forced gratitude. Something that had learned to love its chains.

That was the promise, she realized. Not the words spoken. The years of keeping them.
