VARIANT SAMPLE: Mirror Souls — Sci-Fi Gothic

The twin stations of Castor and Pollux hung in the void like two halves of a broken face, mirrored in their architecture, mirrored in their purpose, and—Commander Elara Cross would soon discover—mirrored in their sins.

Unit-7A stood in observation deck four, pressing his palm against the transparisteel viewport. Beyond the glass, the Oort Cloud stretched into infinity, a glittering desert of ice and ancient light. Behind him, Unit-7B waited in the medical bay, still sealed in his recovery pod, still connected to the neural sync array that had linked their minds for seventy-two hours straight before the murder.

Cross reviewed the biometric log for the third time. The data was irrefutable: at 03:47 station time, when Dr. Cassian Voss was found dead in the AI Core Chamber, both 7A and 7B were running a synchronized memory protocol. Their heart rates, their neural patterns, their bio-electric signatures—all identical. Not just similar. Identical.

"Investigative logic dictates that two people cannot occupy the same space simultaneously," Cross said to the empty deck.

Unit-7A didn't turn around. "Your logic assumes we're two people, Commander."

She looked at the data again. The sync array had been running for seventy-two hours. Long enough for memories to bleed between the two neural networks. Long enough for one memory—Voss's final moments, the smell of his ozone-charged blood, the look in his eyes—to appear in both their minds simultaneously.

Not two people. One soul in two bodies. And if one of them killed Voss, what happened to the other?
