The Pyre of the Soul

The air in Paris was thick with the smell of ozone and burning hair. It was 1793, the height of the Terror, and the city had become a giant, open-air furnace. Julien, a poet whose verses were as delicate as lace and as dangerous as a blade, lived in a cellar that felt more like a tomb.

Julien was a secret royalist, not out of a love for kings, but out of a love for the beauty they had funded. His poems were his only sanctuary, a secret garden of imagery and longing. Most importantly, they were the only place where he kept the memory of Elodie, a woman he had loved and lost to the guillotine a year prior.

Every poem was a letter to her, a desperate attempt to keep her spirit from dissolving into the grey void of the Republic.

One evening, the Committee of Public Safety raided his cellar. They didn't find weapons or letters to the English, but they found his notebooks. To the revolutionaries, poetry was a luxury of the aristocracy, and beauty was a symptom of treason.

"You are a romantic, citizen," the officer sneered, his boots clicking on the stone floor. "And romance is a lie told by the oppressors."

They didn't arrest Julien. Instead, they gave him a "civic duty."

In the center of the square, a massive bonfire had been lit. It was the Pyre of Purification, where the "filth of the old world" was burned to make room for the new. The crowd cheered as books, paintings, and silk gowns were tossed into the flames.

"Your turn," the officer commanded, handing Julien his own notebooks.

Julien stood before the fire. He looked at the pages—the descriptions of Elodie's laughter, the metaphysical explorations of their shared solitude. He knew that if he refused, he would be on the scaffold by morning. If he complied, he would be a living ghost.

He began to feed the fire.

He tore out the first page. The flame leaped up, turning the ink into a searing, golden light. He felt a sharp, physical pain in his chest, as if the fire were consuming his own lungs.

As the poems burned, Julien didn't see the crowd or the officers. He saw Elodie. He saw her fading, her image blurring as the words that sustained her were turned to ash. He was not just destroying paper; he was erasing the only version of her that still existed in the world.

By the time the last page vanished, Julien was standing in a circle of grey soot. The crowd was cheering, celebrating the victory of reason over romance.

Julien looked at his empty hands. He was alive, but he was hollow. He had saved his body by incinerating his soul. He walked away from the fire, the smell of burning ink clinging to his clothes like a shroud, knowing that for the rest of his life, he would be the only person who remembered that Elodie had ever existed.
