The Last Cigarette

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just turned the grime into a slick, reflective mirror that showed you exactly how ugly everything was. I walked into the warehouse on 4th Street, the smell of ozone and rotting fish clinging to the air. My shoes clicked on the concrete, a lonely sound that seemed to echo longer than it should.

I had a folder under my arm and a hole in my soul where a conscience used to be. The deal was simple: deliver the documents to the man in the grey suit, collect the envelope of cash, and disappear to a beach in Mexico where nobody knew my name or the things I'd done to get the folder.

The man in the grey suit was waiting in a circle of yellow light, surrounded by four goons who looked like they'd been carved out of granite and hate. He didn't smile. He didn't even move. He just held out his hand.

"You're late, Leo," he said. His voice sounded like gravel being crushed by a steamroller.

"Traffic was a bitch," I replied, my voice a dry rasp. "The city's bleeding, and the ambulances are stuck in the rain."

I handed over the folder. He opened it, scanned the pages with a clinical indifference, and then looked at me. There was something in his eyes—a flicker of amusement, the kind of look a cat gives a mouse right before it decides whether to eat it or just play with it for a while.

That was the moment I knew.

I didn't need to see the guns being drawn. I didn't need to hear the click of the safeties. I just felt the sudden, cold void where the cash envelope should have been. My employer, the man who had promised me a new life, had just sold my location for a fraction of the payout. I wasn't the courier; I was the loose end.

I stopped walking. I didn't try to run. Where do you run in a city that's already a graveyard?

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a crumpled pack of Luckies. I took one out, lit it with a shaking hand, and took a long, deep drag. The smoke tasted like burnt rubber and regret.

"You know," I said, exhaling a cloud of grey into the yellow light, "I always wondered what the end would look like. I thought it would be loud. A car chase, a shootout, something with a bit of flair."

The man in the grey suit tilted his head. "And instead?"

"Instead, it's just a damp warehouse and a man who doesn't even remember my name," I whispered.

I looked up at the corrugated iron roof, where the rain was drumming a frantic, mindless beat. I thought about the beach in Mexico, the white sand and the blue water, and I realized it was the most beautiful lie I'd ever believed.

I flicked the ash onto the concrete and looked the man in the eye. I didn't beg. I didn't scream. I just stood there, a small, broken man in a wet coat, holding onto the only thing I had left: the timing of my own exit.

"Do it," I said.

The flash of the muzzle was the only light the warehouse had seen in years.
