The Last Sentinel of the Grey Moors

The rain in the Northern Marches did not fall; it clung. It was a thick, oppressive shroud that blurred the line between the charcoal sky and the sodden earth. Arthur stepped over a collapsed limestone arch, his boots sinking into the peat with a wet, rhythmic thud. He wore the remnants of a crimson tunic, now faded to the color of dried blood, the gold braiding of the Imperial Guard frayed and blackened by decades of salt air.

He had returned to Fort Aethelgard not for glory, but for a ghost.

The fortress had once been the crown jewel of the borderlands, a sprawling monolith of granite and iron that commanded the valley. Now, it was a skeletal ruin. The great keep had buckled under its own weight, its towers leaning like drunken giants against the wind. Arthur walked through the shattered gates, the iron hinges long since rusted into silence.

In the center of the courtyard, he stopped. Here, the earth had heaved, pushing up the bleached ribs of a dozen men. They lay in a circle, their skeletal hands still clutching the shafts of broken spears. These were his brothers-in-arms—the Third Cohort. He remembered the night they had held the breach, the screaming wind and the thunder of the collapse. He had been the only one to make it past the gates before the landslide sealed the fort in a tomb of stone.

Arthur knelt beside a skull, its empty sockets staring up at the grey void. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket. Inside was a portrait of a woman whose name he had almost forgotten, a remnant of a life lived before the Empire had consumed him.

"We held the line," he whispered, his voice a dry rattle.

But as he looked around at the desolate waste, the words felt like a joke. The Empire he had bled for was gone. The cities had burned, the laws had vanished, and the great roads were now nothing more than paths for wolves. The glory he had guarded was a phantom, a lie told by men in gilded halls to ensure that boys like him would die in the mud.

A sudden gust of wind howled through the ruins, sounding like a thousand distant screams. Arthur closed his eyes. He could almost see the banners snapping in the breeze, hear the trumpets calling the assembly. But when he opened them, there was only the grey rain and the white bone.

He realized then that he was not a survivor. He was merely a delayed casualty. The solitude of the moors was a slower execution than the landslide had been. He lay down among the ribs of his comrades, the cold mud seeping through his tunic. He felt the heavy weight of the silence pressing down on him, an invisible monument to a forgotten cause.

As the light faded from the sky, Arthur let the locket slip from his fingers. It fell into the peat, disappearing into the dark, indifferent earth. He closed his eyes, and for the first time in forty years, he stopped listening for the trumpets.
