The Well of Echoes

The Blackwood Estate did not simply decay; it surrendered. The house was a skeletal remains of Southern grandeur, its white pillars peeling like dead skin, surrounded by a swamp that breathed a thick, sulfurous mist. And in the center of the overgrown garden sat the Well—a circle of blackened stones, chained shut with rusted iron.

I grew up in the shadow of that well. As an orphan taken in by the distant cousins of the Blackwood line, I was a ghost in my own home. I spent my days wandering the corridors of the house, listening to the whispers of the servants and the heavy, rhythmic breathing of the swamp.

The well was the heart of the house's silence. No one spoke of it, but everyone feared it. They said it was a place of "bad air," a spot where the earth had forgotten how to be kind.

When I turned sixteen, I found the letters. They were tucked inside a rotting leather satchel in the attic, written in a hand that trembled with a desperate, dying hope. They were from a woman named Clara, a distant relative who had vanished forty years prior.

The letters spoke of a love that was forbidden and a betrayal that was absolute. Clara had been a servant who had fallen in love with the youngest Blackwood son. When the family discovered the liaison, they didn't just separate them; they erased her. The letters described the night she was dragged to the well, the sound of the chains rattling, and the cold, dark descent into the earth.

I spent a summer obsessing over those letters. I would sit by the well for hours, not hearing ghosts, but feeling the weight of the history beneath my feet. I realized that the "curse" of the Blackwood family wasn't supernatural; it was a genetic predisposition to cruelty, a cycle of shame passed down through blood and silence.

The well was not a portal to another world; it was a mirror. Every time a Blackwood looked into it, they saw the reflection of their own capacity for evil.

In the end, I didn't open the well. There was no need. The truth was already out, living in the letters and in the way the current masters of the house avoided my gaze. I left the estate the day I turned eighteen, carrying the letters with me.

As I drove away, I looked back at the house. It looked smaller, more fragile. The well was still there, chained and silent, but it no longer held any power over me. The only thing truly buried in the Blackwood soil was the illusion of their nobility.
