The Price of Persuasion

Leo Sterling was the most successful man in New York, and the most empty. He possessed a gift that was less a skill and more a curse: absolute persuasion. Leo could walk into any room, speak a few carefully modulated sentences, and convince the most stubborn man on earth to sign away his soul, his company, or his life.

But the universe demands a balance. Every time Leo successfully persuaded a power center to join his will, he paid a price. The cost was random, visceral, and permanent.

The first time it happened, he was twenty-four, convincing a senator to change his vote on a trade bill. As the senator signed the paper, Leo felt a sudden, sharp pop in his left ear. The world went silent on that side. He had traded his hearing for a political victory.

Over the next decade, Leo built an empire of influence. He created a secret alliance of five financial titans, a "Shadow Cabinet" that effectively controlled the flow of capital in the Western hemisphere. He was the architect, the weaver, the sole point of contact.

But the price grew steeper.

To win over the head of the Federal Reserve, he lost the ability to taste. To secure the loyalty of the European Central Bank, he lost the memory of his mother's face. To bind the Asian markets to his will, he lost the sensation of touch in his right hand.

By the time the Alliance was complete, Leo was a ghost of a man. He lived in a penthouse of white marble and silence, a king of a world he could no longer feel. He could still persuade—his voice remained a weapon of terrifying precision—but there was no one left to persuade for.

One evening, Leo sat at his desk, looking at the five gold seals of the Alliance. He had achieved the ultimate goal: total, uncontested coordination of global power. He was the most powerful human being in history.

He tried to remember why he had wanted this. He searched his mind for the ambition, the greed, or the vision that had driven him. But there was nothing. He had traded away the memories of his desires to achieve the desires themselves.

He looked at his reflection in the window. He saw a handsome man in a perfect suit, but he felt like a hollow shell, a suit of armor with no one inside. He had spent his life building a bridge to the top, only to find that he had burned every single plank behind him.

He picked up the phone to call one of the titans, to perhaps suggest a new direction for the Alliance. But as he opened his mouth, he realized he no longer cared about the result. The power was there, absolute and shimmering, but he had no longer the capacity to want it.

Leo Sterling, the man who could convince anyone of anything, had finally convinced himself that he didn't exist.
